POSITION SUMMARY
The Maintenance Manager will be joining the Business Unit at our rapidly expanding school. The core aspects of the role include oversight of the maintenance and upkeep of the school’s buildings, grounds, and facilities. Our Maintenance Team ensures a safe, clean, and aesthetically pleasing environment for students, staff, and visitors. The Maintenance Manager will oversee staff and coordinate with contractors and suppliers. This role combines leadership and hands-on responsibilities, requiring the manager to both supervise the maintenance team and actively perform maintenance tasks. Candidates with management experience, relevant qualifications (including WHS or trade qualifications) or industry experience are encouraged to apply. Â
RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities detailed below are not exhaustive and serve as a general guide, complete with examples, of the tasks that the Maintenance Manager might need to perform. The skills and experience of the selected candidate will also be considered.
Main ObjectivesÂ
- Coordinate Staff and Contractors:Â Oversee the coordination of school staff and external contractors for the maintenance and improvement of facilities.
- Operational Support:Â Actively contribute to maintenance and cleaning tasks as needed, including covering duties during staff absences, in alignment with relevant position descriptions, to ensure consistent operational continuity.
- Facility Improvement:Â Identify and implement minor projects to repair, replace, improve, and enhance school facilities.
- Compliance and Safety:Â Ensure compliance with relevant council and government requirements, Work Health & Safety legislation, and environmental guidelines.
- Support Quality Education:Â Assist the school in ensuring facilities/environment support the delivery of high-quality education.
- Maintain a Safe Environment:Â Ensure a pleasant and safe working environment for the school community.
Minor Projects
- Project Management:Â Oversee certain minor projects from inception to completion, ensuring they are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget.
- Stakeholder Engagement:Â Collaborate with the Business Manager, maintenance team, local businesses, contractors, authorities, and other key stakeholders to ensure smooth project execution.
- Quality Assurance: Ensure all projects meet the school’s quality standards and comply with relevant regulations and safety standards.
Maintenance and Cleaning
- Staff Management:Â Supervise and support maintenance and cleaning staff, ensuring they are well-trained and resourced, while proactively addressing workplace issues in a collaborative environment.
- Maintenance Planning: Develop and implement maintenance schedules to ensure the school’s buildings, grounds, and equipment are well-maintained.
- Oversight:Â Manage and monitor the responsibilities of direct reports, as outlined in their position descriptions.
- Quality Control:Â Monitor the quality of maintenance and cleaning work, addressing any issues promptly to maintain a safe and pleasant environment.
Facilities Management
- Facility Improvement: Assist the school in identifying opportunities for facility improvements and implement projects to enhance the school’s infrastructure.
- Security Oversight:Â Assist with school security, including systems, lock-up, protocols, and staff, to ensure a safe environment. Required to be available after-hours for emerging security issues.
- Resource Management:Â Oversee the procurement and management of plant and equipment necessary for the operation of the maintenance team.
Additional Responsibilities
- Community Engagement:Â Participate in school events and meetings, fostering a positive and collaborative school community.
- Budgeting and Planning:Â In conjunction with the Business Manager, develop budget estimates and project plans for minor projects, as well as the annual budgets for Cleaning, Maintenance (including Grounds), and Security.
- Facilities Hire: Assist in the assessment and management of facility hire requests, ensuring they align with school operations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Blue Card
- Driver’s Licence
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Regulatory Knowledge:Â Knowledge of building regulations, construction codes, and WHS regulations.
- Project Management:Â Managing small-medium scale projects, including budget management and stakeholder coordination
- Maintenance Oversight: Overseeing building maintenance, including electrical, plumbing, and carpentry work.
- Groundskeeping Oversight: Overseeing groundskeeping, landscaping, and garden maintenance.
- Software Proficiency: Skills and experience using office administration & project management tools.
- Preventative Maintenance: Developing and implementing preventative maintenance schedules.
- Licences/Certificates: White card, Test & Tag, Working at Heights / Confined Spaces, First Aid and CPR.
- Trade qualification:Â Any relevant trade qualification. For example, Electrical, Carpentry, HVAC or Plumbing.
- Diploma/Advanced Diploma: Building & Construction, Facilities Management, WHS or Business.
- Leadership:Â Experience in leading and managing teams, particularly in maintenance and facilities management.
- Sector Understanding:Â Independent Education Sector
- Safety Compliance:Â Adhering to safety regulations and protocols. WHS qualifications.

- Inventory Management:Â Keeping track of all relevant school items, including maintenance & grounds supplies and equipment.
- Networking:Â Developing and managing networks with trades, contractors, and consultants.
- Technical Expertise:Â Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, civil, electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical plans.
- Report Writing:Â Ability to write high-quality reports, meeting notes, and present to groups.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
The role requires occasional availability for flexible hours, including weekends, evenings, and school holidays, to address urgent matters as they arise.
