Are you a primary school teacher looking to move beyond the traditional classroom setting? Are you passionate about partnering with families and communities in education? Do you enjoy mentoring and supporting children in their individual learning goals? Do you have an interest in education in regional and remote contexts?
MAF is looking for an experienced primary school teacher to support and resource our international staff families as they seek to educate their children while serving in remote communities in Arnhem Land.
MAF is the largest humanitarian airline in the world. Each and every day we are flying for life - bringing emergency relief, long-term development and the good news of Jesus to people living in isolated communities around the world, and right here in Australia. At the invitation of the Yolngu people, MAF has been providing aviation and technical services to remote communities in Arnhem Land for over 40 years. The majority of our dedicated multicultural team of international staff, together with their families, live in isolated communities alongside the Yolngu people whom they serve. As a result, many of the MAF kids in Arnhem Land are receiving their education via non-traditional means including home schooling (using a wide variety of curriculums and languages), internet schooling and participation in local bilingual schools. These children and their parents need the support of a creative, dedicated professional to help them navigate the unique educational challenges they face.
This vital role will see you:
- advise parents on educational issues and options and support them in accessing or developing curriculum and other teaching and learning resources as require
- visit home-schooling families on location in the Yolngu homelands each term to support both parents and children in their educational activities
- work with parents and the community to develop and provide a range of opportunities for group learning and social interaction for children to support their social needs and development
The ideal candidate will be an accredited primary school teacher with experience at multiple grade levels. Experience with home-schooling, teaching multi-grade classes and/ or teaching children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds would be an advantage.
The role will be based out of the MAF’s base in Nhulunbuy in the Northern Territory, with frequent travel to the MAF outstations in the Yolngu homelands required.
Applicants must have the legal right to work in Australia. Successful applicants will be subject to background checks including a National Criminal history check and a verification of a Working with Children Check.
