General Description

The Deputy Head of School role is a crucial part of the School’s senior leadership team, contributing to the development and implementation of the School’s Registered Management Committee (RMC) Strategic Goals.

Key components of the position include:

  • Deputizing for the Head of School.
  • Godly spiritual leadership amongst staff and school community
  • Commitment to ensuring the Lordship of Christ in all aspects of school life.
  • Leadership of staff to ensure effective and Christ-centred instructional practices.

Accountability and Functional Relationships

The Deputy Head of School will be accountable to the RMC, Head of School and the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).

Internal functional relationships are with:

  • Senior Leadership Team
  • Middle Leadership Team
  • Counselling Team
  • Teachers and Support Staff
  • Students

External functional relationships are with:

  • Parents and Guardians
  • Professional Associations
  • Other Educational Organisations
  • KTAC
  • RMC and CAIS Limited (School Sponsoring Body)

Matters that must be reported to the Head of School

  • Breaches of Special Character and professional standards
  • Excess spending of allocated budget

Responsibilities

1. To work with senior leadership team to be a godly role model, to monitor the impact of the School’s Special Character on the curriculum, monitor staff involvement in Christian education programmes, implement school development features which focus on the Special Character and promote the Christian school in the wider community.

  • Takes part and leads staff devotions.
  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of special character within the school’s foundational documents.
  • Takes opportunities to integrate a Christian worldview in professional practice.
    Supports the Head of School and RMC in developing policies to enhance the Special Character of the school.
  • Undertakes tasks delegated by the Head of School to promote Christian education in the local community and beyond.

2. To participate and to take a lead role in development of policies and programmes for the ongoing effective management of the school.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of Hong Kong and Alberta requirements for planning and managing school programmes.
  • Demonstrates an ability to plan strategically and to implement operational plans.
  • Collaborates with Senior leaders to develop and carry out school wide strategic plans.
  • Understands and appreciates the International Education Hong Kong context.

3. To assist in the effective management of school personnel policies, procedures and practices including leading the school’s performance management system.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the personnel policies of the school.
  • Assists in the appointments process.
  • Oversees the performance management system in the school for both teaching and support staff.
  • Provides support to all staff in fulfilling their professional tasks.
  • Works with teachers to improve their teaching practices through coaching, modelling, and collaborative planning.

4. To take a full role in fostering and developing effective and supportive relationships both within the school and to its community.

  • Shows an ability to develop sound relationships with staff and school community.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of consultative leadership.
  • Is able to articulate to the school and its community, policies and procedures relating to the school.
  • Contributes to School Newsletter.

5. To provide, in conjunction with the Head of School and other senior leaders, effective internal communication systems.

  • Is able to communicate effectively with staff and students.
  • Maintains communication between senior leadership and staff in delegated areas of responsibility.
  • Acts as an effective liaison between staff, students and school leadership.
  • Provides appropriate and timely information to staff and students on school events and issues.

6. To effectively manage, within delegated limits, financial and asset resources to support the teaching and learning programmes.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the effective management of school budgets and assets.
  • Acts in line with delegated authority to implement school policies relating to financial and asset management.

7. To participate in personal professional development in line with school development needs and identified professional objectives.

  • Participates in performance management system within the school as it relates to personal performance.
  • Seeks to enhance own understanding of pedagogical and management practices.
  • Takes professional development opportunities to enhance own personal growth and professional practices.

8. Day to Day Leadership

  • Maintains uniform standards.
  • Maintains standards of behaviour.
  • Supports the school admissions, enrolment and branding.

9. Specific leadership roles: Deputize for Head of School

  • This is a major component of the position and will at times require the Deputy Head of School to be the “Acting Head of School” with all incumbent responsibilities.

10. Facilities oversight

  • Liaises with Facilities Management Office to ensure the school buildings and facilities are maintained to a high standard of repair and cleanliness.
    Ensures appropriate staffing levels to achieve the above.

11. Oversight of Inclusive Education: Counselling, English Language Learning, Learning Support

  • Responds to significant student concerns and liaises with Counsellors and Learning Support.
  • Child Protection Policies and Procedures.
  • Child Protection Policy Officer.

12. Quality of Teaching and Learning: Professional Development, Faculty Appraisals, Teacher Competency

  • Ensures the school has a focused Professional Development programme.
  • Approves Professional Development applications.
  • Oversees staff appraisal system.
  • Supports Senior Leaders in dealing with cases of teacher discipline and competency.

13. Start of Year arrangements

  • Plans for the first week back for teachers and students in liaison with the Senior Leaders.

14. Teacher Induction

  • Prepares and lead the induction programme for new teachers.

15. School Handbooks, Governance and Management Policies

  • Ensures all School handbooks are up to date
  • Ensures all School policies are reviewed as per schedule.

16. Parent Engagement

  • Oversees the annual establishment of the School Council.
  • Facilitates regular School Council meetings.
  • Updates and manages parent electronic messaging system.
  • Oversees parent education events.

17. ICT Development Oversight

  • Liaises with Department Head and Senior Leadership Team.

18. General Office Oversight

  • Liaises with Department Head and Senior Leadership Team.

19. Other roles:

  • Discipline: Internal suspensions
  • Health and Safety
  • EOTC approval for overnight trips
  • Academic Committee member
  • Yearly School Calendar
  • Data Privacy Officer

20. Other ad-hoc duties

  • Ad-hoc duties as required and assigned

The Candidate

To qualify for the role, applicants should be a Christian leader with sound academic and teaching qualifications and experience, and demonstrated with academic leadership and relevant administrative experience.

Terms of Appointment

The starting date for appointment is negotiable, and may commence from January 2026, or at a mutually agreed date, but no later than 3rd August 2026.  Appointment will be made on a three-year fixed term contract with renewal subject to mutual agreement.

Note: Bachelor of Education, or bachelor degree in relevant major subject(s) with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or equivalent teaching credential with a least 10 weeks’ practicum is required for CAIS teachers.  Teachers appointed to CAIS are required to apply for Alberta teaching certification in order to teach subjects under the Alberta programs of study.  Please refer to this link for more information on the requirements for Alberta teacher certification but do not apply until an employment contract is offered and accepted.
